What color is it?: . As you can see above this gemstone is a beautiful purple with mottled dark-purple to almost black lines running through it.

What is the story behind this gemstone?: The first finding of this gemstone was in Japan, and was of a yellow/brown color. However, the more popular variety is that seen above which is violet to purple and is found in South Africa.

Can I wear it everyday?: Absolutely. It is a very long wearing stone.

Is it expensive?: Not really. About the same as a nice piece of nephrite jade as of this writing. But as supplies are reported to be dwindling prices will surely rise in the near future.

Is it a birthstone?: No.

What do I need to know before going shopping?: There are a lot of possible imitations of sugilite out there so you should be very careful to stay with an established jeweler. The stones are not expensive but each one will be unique in color and design so shop with someone who can give you a variety to look at.

Source: South Africa for the most common purple variety.

Chemical: Complex silicate of iron, aluminum and water. Manganese is the source of the purple color.

Formation: In basic igneous rocks.

Crystal System: Hexagonal although rarely seen as crystals.

Unusual Properties: The coloration is the most remarkable property.
